If you’re reading this in Arizona, then chances are that you’ve seen me because I am the face of Zanes Law. We’ve created this website so that we can get to know each other better, on a more personal level, and create a dialogue to share ideas and thoughts as a community.
The first thing you should know about me is that I’m the in the first generation of my family to be born in the United States … Del Rio, Texas, to be exact. We moved to Nogales, Ariz., when I was 3 years old. All of my family is from Mexico and I grew up on both sides of the fence – literally! Throughout my childhood, one of the biggest impressions I had was how industrious my family was, but they never considered work work – they knew what had to be done and they did it. In Mexico, you make your living day to day. What you earn today is what you’re going to buy your food with tomorrow. My family owned little restaurants, which is where I spent a lot of my time as a kid, learning the business from the ground up.
That work ethic carried over into my professional life, as a young woman making her way in the world. It helped me launch a very successful career in sales, which I enjoyed thoroughly until 2003, when I decided to join my husband, Doug, in growing his own law practice. Looking back, it probably looks like an easy decision to make, but it wasn’t. I had to overcome my insecurities of leaving a life as an employee to become an entrepreneur. But I realized that I could leave my job and still pay myself, including benefits three times over. And I would have the freedom to run a business as I saw fit, instead of running someone else’s.
One of the questions I’m asked all the time is whether I’m a lawyer or whether I want to be a lawyer. No, I’m not. One in the family is enough … thank you very much … and Doug’s got that more than covered! I love the business side of Zanes Law. And I’m good at what I do.
Now, more than 12 years after Doug and I began, we have a thriving, growing business … and we’re still married! It hasn’t been easy. I’m still Doug’s wife … Casey’s mother … Veronica’s mother … but I’ve also been leading the business for the fastest growing personal injury law brand in Arizona. I began this story of my life with family and it comes back around to family. At the root of it all is family. I will let everything else go before I let that go. Doug and I will always be there for our family, spend time with them and take care of our health. We don’t have to go fast. We don’t have to go as fast as we think we need to go. We can slow down. We can enjoy what we’re doing now. We are grateful for everything we have and we have professional and personal goals that we’re seeking, too. Everything has a place and time!
For fun, I enjoy reading books by Jodi Picoult, John Grisham and Lauren Weisburger. I love spending time with my grandchildren, daughters and friends. My friends are like family – I invest a lot of time and commitment to them, which makes everything I do at work worth it. Doug and I love to travel and just be outdoors, seeing the mountains, the ocean and skiing.
